Building Strong, Beautiful Retaining Walls That Transform Your Landscape

Retaining walls are one of the most impactful structural improvements a homeowner can make to their landscape. Whether used to control erosion, manage elevation changes, create usable yard space, or add visual definition, a properly designed retaining wall can completely transform both the function and appearance of your property.

At Conley Lawn and Landscape, we approach every retaining wall project with a balance of engineering mindset and landscape design creativity. While every site presents unique challenges — from soil conditions to slope severity — our proven process ensures that each wall we build is designed for long-term durability, proper drainage, and seamless integration into the surrounding landscape.

Understanding Retaining Wall Design and Planning

The first step in any retaining wall installation is understanding the specific needs of the property. We evaluate slope grade, soil stability, water movement, and how the wall will interact with existing structures, patios, driveways, or landscape beds.

Some retaining walls are built purely for structural support, while others serve a dual purpose — providing both soil retention and a strong visual element that enhances curb appeal. Our goal is always to design a wall that not only performs structurally but also feels like a natural extension of your home’s outdoor space.

Choosing the Right Retaining Wall Block System

There are two primary types of retaining wall block systems commonly used in residential landscape construction. The first is the traditional angular retaining wall block, which creates a stepped setback as the wall rises. This design provides natural reinforcement through weight distribution and is ideal for many standard slope applications.

The second option is the pin system retaining wall block, which allows for near-vertical construction. These blocks utilize a durable composite pin that interlocks each course together. This system provides increased design flexibility, especially in tighter spaces where a more upright wall profile is desired.

Selecting the right block system depends on the site conditions, wall height, available space, and overall landscape design goals.

Creating a Strong Foundation for Long-Term Performance

The true strength of any retaining wall begins below grade. Our installation process starts with excavating and preparing a solid base trench. We then install a compacted foundation layer using high-quality aggregate base material.

Once properly compacted, the first course of retaining wall block is carefully leveled and set into concrete to create a secure structural starting point. For additional reinforcement and long-term integrity, we incorporate rebar support rods in the lower block courses, adding another level of insurance against shifting or movement over time.

This foundation work is critical — it ensures the wall remains stable through seasonal freeze-thaw cycles, heavy rainfall, and soil pressure changes.

Proper Drainage: The Key to Retaining Wall Longevity

Water management is one of the most important aspects of retaining wall construction. Without proper drainage, hydrostatic pressure can build up behind the wall, leading to failure or premature deterioration.

To prevent this, we install a dedicated drainage zone behind the wall consisting of approximately 16 inches of clean gravel backfill. A permeable drainage fabric is placed between the gravel and the native soil to prevent fines from clogging the drainage system.

This layered approach allows water to move freely away from the wall while maintaining soil separation and structural stability. In many applications, additional drainage components such as outlet pipes or dispersion points may also be incorporated depending on site conditions.

Blending Structure with Landscape Design

Beyond structural performance, retaining walls also provide an opportunity to elevate your landscape design. Walls can create terraced planting areas, define outdoor living spaces, support patios, or add depth and dimension to previously unusable slopes.

We work closely with homeowners to ensure the final design complements the home’s architecture and long-term landscape vision. From natural stone textures to modern block finishes, the right retaining wall can become a defining feature of your property.

Why Homeowners Trust Conley Lawn and Landscape

Our retaining wall projects are built on a foundation of planning, craftsmanship, and clear communication. We take the time to explain design options, structural considerations, and drainage solutions so homeowners feel confident in their investment.

Because no two properties are the same, every retaining wall we build is tailored to the site — engineered for strength and designed for beauty. The result is a landscape improvement that adds lasting value, improves functionality, and enhances the overall experience of your outdoor space.

If you’re considering a retaining wall for your property in Franklin or the surrounding areas, Conley Lawn and Landscape would be honored to help you design and build a solution that stands the test of time.
